» Wimbledon 2006 Date: jun 28 2006 26 June starts one of the most exciting and prestigious annual tennis tournaments – legendary Wimbledon. There are four “Grand Slam” tournaments throughout the year, but Wimbledon is a special one. At first, it the oldest tournament dating back to 1877. It’s also the only lawn championship of these four. England is known for its love to different traditions and Wimbledon boasts a lot of them. Strawberry with cream has become a symbol of Wimbledon and this year 27 tons of this dessert are expected to be eaten. Wimbledon traditional colors are green and purple. Another tradition that all the tennis-players should be dressed only in white. Wimbledon has turned into high life event, but it’s still sport that plays the main role. All sportsmen from the top of WTA and ATP ratings take part, but there are some favorites among them, of course. Men’s singles leader is Roger Federer who will try to win here for the fourth time. After his defeat in Paris it wouldn’t be out of place. In women’s part of Wimbledon it’s Maria Sharapova who will defend her last year’s title. Sad news for tennis fans – this Wimbledon will become the last for Andre Agassi – he’s leaving sport after US Open in September.
