» The Peter Pan Cup Date: dec 25 2006 Christmas swimming races are a common tradition in many European
countries, and England is not the exception. One of the Christmas traditions
that is followed in London is The Peter Pan Cup, that has been organized here
since 1864. The swimming cup got this name thanks to novelist JM Barrie who
immortalized the race by presenting the first “Peter Pan Cup”. Every year, while
all the rest are either stuck in bed or doing their Christmas shopping, members
of the Serpentine Swimming Club are making their race in the icy cold water. In
contrast to those who change their place to indoor swimming pools when the water
gets cold, the Peter Pan Cup competitors are much more brave people who are not
afraid to bathe in the freezing water of Hyde Park’s enormous lake. Even though
only the members of the club are allowed to participate, you can still observe
the competition along with a great number of other viewers. The race starts
December 25th at 9 am. Nearest
