Antony Donaldson at the Rocket gallery Aug 14 2007
One of the most curious exhibitions available at London currently is the
exhibition of photographs by Antony Donaldson at the Rocket gallery. The British
artist got famous in the 1960s’ (especially for his popular imagery derived
from advertisements and magazines) and that is why many of his works are filled
with the spirit of that time. Another important page in the artist’s life is the
period between 1959 and 1968 when his works were shown at the Whitechapel along
with the “Young Contemporaries” and “The New Generation”. But the exhibition at
the Rockets covers another short period of his artistic life – those are two
years when he lived in Los Angeles and was focusing on Art Deco city cinemas.
Attracted by the searchlights in the city sky and the images of the cinemas
themselves, the photographer made beautiful pictures, which are now displayed
for the first time at the Rocket. The exhibition is opened till September
8th, 2007.
