“Carmen” at London Coliseum Sep 29 2007
English National Opera opens the new season
with a famous opera by Georges Bizet, “Carmen”, performed September
29th – November 23rd at London Coliseum. Based on Prosper
Mérimée’s novel, “Carmen” is probably one of the most tragic and moving stories
– a tale of passion between the gypsy Carmen and the soldier Don José, which
leads to a murder. The production is the result of co-work between music
director Edward Gardner, film director Sally Potter and choreographers Sally
Potter, Pablo Veron and Kate Flatt. Main parts are played by Alice Coote
(Carmen), Julian Gavin (Don José), Katie Van Kooten (Micaela), David Kempster
(Escamillo) and Elena Xanthoudakis (Frasquita). The opera is sung in a
translation by Christopher Cowell and features everything a person needs to
enjoy a performance: touchy plot, excellent decorations and costumes and
wonderful music by Bizet.
