Madam Butterfly in London Coliseum May 31 2006
Anthony Minghella presents his first experience as an opera director. Those, who will get to London Coliseum on Wednesday, 31st May 2006, will have an opportunity to see and hear his interpretation of the famous Madam Butterfly. This opera was written by Giacomo Puccini and tells a sad story of love between geisha Cio-Cio-San and American lieutenant Pinkerton. Puccini first version of the opera failed at La Scala in 1904, but a revised version was successful the same year. Anthony Minghella staging has won in Best Opera category in this year Olivier Awards. It is conducted by David Parry, with Janice Watson performing in the title role and David Kempster as Sharpless, Gwyn Hughes Jones as Pinkerton and Jean Rigby as Suzuki. London Coliseum where the performance takes place is one of the largest theaters in London. It became the new home of The Sadler Wells Opera Company - renamed The English National Opera - in 1968 since when they have presented annual season’s of opera - all sung in English.
