BAFTA and Bollywood Jul 14 2006
During the second half of XX century Indian cinema has earned worldwide popularity and Indian cinema studio in Bombay (now Mumbai) received a nickname “Bollywood” by analogy with American Hollywood. Like Hollywood, Bollywood is a dream factory, forming the image of the country abroad. There are few things further from reality than Indian movies, but that’s what we like them for. It’s so pleasant to be redirected to the land of fantasy where the kind always wins. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) dedicates a three day (14, 15, 16 July) film festival to celebrate the global success of Bollywood. During festival visitors will see a selection of blockbuster hits. Stars attending the this event in London include megastar Shahrukh Khan (Devdas), Oscar nominated actor and producer of Lagaan, Aamir Khan, actress Preity Zinta (Dil Chahta Hai) and the famous director Karan Johar whose film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was one of the highest grossing Indian film overseas. The weekend will consist of screenings, events and dedicated evenings and conversations with some of Bollywood’s most celebrated superstars.
