Silke Schatz in Wilkinson Gallery Aug 13 2006
Wilkinson Gallery presents "Private & Public" – an exhibition of Silke Schatz, devoted to her native city - Celle in Northern Germany. Today Celle is known as a tourist town with a castle and the typical wooden framework houses of the Lower Saxony area. The exhibition is divided two parts – private and public. In the public part Schatz presents works based on the architect Otto Haesler and the private part is an installation relating to her grandparents who lived in Celle. Otto Haesler built suburban colonies such as the Siedlung Georgsgarten, 1927 and villas, such as The Direktorenwohnhaus, 1931-32. The private aspect of the project concerns Schatz’s grandfather, who was a SS-officer, who later went on trial for an unsolved murder and committed suicide in the early 1960’s. The installation Wurzelkind in the main gallery includes puppets of her grandparents, Martha and Erich Schatz in front of a large drawing of the Thears Gardenhouse. The exhibition closes on 13th August.
