Designer Womenswear Warehouse Sale
» Designer Womenswear Warehouse Sale
Date: nov 30 2007
Even though there is more than a month left before the New Year celebrations begin, fashion lovers have already started their preparations for the important event. If you are one of those, the event to visit in London is Designer Womenswear Warehouse Sale, which takes place November 30th – December 2nd 2007. “The Independent” calls this event “the Best Designer Discount” outlet in London, which is quite reasonable since the DWS brings together award-winning designer labels, all under one roof. Ladies get a chance to buy fashionable clothes, showroom samples and cancelled orders at discounts (which reach 60 – 80 %), meet fashion editors and stylists and of course chat on this or that. There will also be another fashion event organised for men 7 – 9 December. Mind that the entrance is chargeable.

“Carmen” at London Coliseum
» “Carmen” at London Coliseum
Date: sep 29 2007
English National Opera opens the new season with a famous opera by Georges Bizet, “Carmen”, performed September 29th – November 23rd at London Coliseum. Based on Prosper Mérimée’s novel, “Carmen” is probably one of the most tragic and moving stories – a tale of passion between the gypsy Carmen and the soldier Don José, which leads to a murder. The production is the result of co-work between music director Edward Gardner, film director Sally Potter and choreographers Sally Potter, Pablo Veron and Kate Flatt. Main parts are played by Alice Coote (Carmen), Julian Gavin (Don José), Katie Van Kooten (Micaela), David Kempster (Escamillo) and Elena Xanthoudakis (Frasquita). The opera is sung in a translation by Christopher Cowell and features everything a person needs to enjoy a performance: touchy plot, excellent decorations and costumes and wonderful music by Bizet.

Every year London’s national communities celebrate their traditional events. One of such is Baishakhi Mela, which might be called Europe’s largest Asian open-air festival. This year, the festival celebrates its 10th anniversary. The special focus of the event is a procession of people dressed in colourful traditional clothes and masks, musicians and dancers which will start at the Allen Gardens and finish in Weavers Field. “Giselle” ballet at the London Coliseum
» “Giselle” ballet at the London Coliseum
Date: jan 10 2007
The best way to start this year’s cultural programme is to visit the “Giselle” ballet at the London Coliseum. Named one of the “finest in the world” by the Washington Post, the ballet is being performed by the English National Ballet and promises to be a really memorable event. It is ideal for those who are fond of romantic and tragic stories. It’s a tale of a peasant girl who falls head over ears in love with Count Albrecht, but later finds out that the one she loves lied to her. Absolutely devastated, she dies heartbroken but even after her death, she still cannot find rest and revenges herself upon the offender. The performers and organizers do their best to recapture the spirit of romantic times. In order to do this, traditional costumes, dancing, decorations and staging are used. Visit the ballet performance from January 10th till January 13th, but hurry up if you want to buy a ticket, as there will only be 6 performances.

Halloween Witch Fest
» Halloween Witch Fest
Date: oct 30 2006
Another event after the Pagan festival which coincides with the Halloween celebrations is the annual Halloween Witch Fest that takes place at the London Dungeon October 13-31. London Dungeon is the curious horror museum that is very popular among the bravest ones. Here, you can stroll along the ghost towers and the gloomy rooms as well as observe the expositions that represent dark and muddy streets of the Victorian London and the city as it was during the Great Fire of 1666. Moreover, London Dungeon has an excellent location not far from the Tower of London prison and fortress, which makes it even more “attractive”. As it is seen from the event’s name, the Halloween Witch Fest offers you to discover all the truth about who the witches were as well as entertains the visitors with horror stories and tales told in the fearful atmosphere. Its dungeons are decorated with giant spiders, scarecrows and pumpkins – the symbols of Halloween. Last year there was also a special Children Weekend with games for courageous children.

Notting Hill Carnival
» Notting Hill Carnival
Date: aug 27 2006
Each year in the end of the August the whole Great Britain celebrates Summer Bank Holiday. Forty years ago, in 1966, this time was chosen for Notting Hill Carnival - Europe’s biggest street party. This holiday always falls on the last weekend of August with Sunday and Monday being the major carnival days. At first, it was a local celebration organized by West Indian immigrants. They brought Caribbean flair to London. For reserved British it was something unusual but they liked it and the event became quite popular. The five disciplines of Carnival are: Mas’ from (costume, Masquerade), Steelband, Calypso (political, social and satirical commentary, set to music), Soca (the traditional music of Carnival, a fusion of Soul and Calypso) and Static Sound Systems all play their part on the two days of Carnival-on-the-Road. Visitors won’t be hungry – there are planned hundreds of licensed street stalls selling exotic food. Those, who would like to pay respect to Caribbean heritage, can buy some crafts. This year there also will be three live stages within the Carnival area, featuring local bands, top international artistes, and music from all around the world. These stages play from 12 noon to 7pm on both of the two days.
