Covent Garden sits between Holborn and the Strand, running
from Long Acre down to the Piazza. The area has been a market square since
the 1650s — today the former flower market hosts shops, restaurants
and street performers, with the Royal Opera House opposite. Theatreland
begins immediately to the west around Drury Lane and extends across to
Shaftesbury Avenue.
The area is ideal for visitors who want to walk to dinner and the
theatre. Covent Garden tube (Piccadilly line) and Leicester Square tube
(Piccadilly, Northern) cover the west side; Holborn (Central, Piccadilly)
serves the east. The British Museum is a ten-minute walk north through
Bloomsbury, Trafalgar Square is five minutes south, and the South Bank
— National Theatre, Tate Modern, London Eye — is across
Waterloo Bridge.
Hotels range from landmark four- and five-star properties on the Strand
and Aldwych (The Savoy, One Aldwych, Waldorf Hilton) to smaller townhouse
hotels on Monmouth Street, Mercer Street and Bow Street. Below are 12
hotels in Covent Garden and the immediate surroundings.
