Hampstead sits on a hill in NW3, north-west of Regent’s
Park and Primrose Hill. The village kept its old high street when the tube
arrived in 1907 and still feels distinct from the rest of central London
— Georgian and Victorian houses, narrow lanes off Hampstead Grove,
the open grassland of Hampstead Heath at the top of the hill. Writers and
artists lived and worked here for two centuries; the associations with
Keats, Orwell and Constable are physical, not marketing.
Staying here suits travellers who want green space and a quieter evening
atmosphere while keeping a direct line to the centre. Hampstead tube
(Northern) is 15 minutes to Tottenham Court Road and 20 to London Bridge.
Swiss Cottage station (Jubilee) runs to Bond Street in 10 minutes. The Heath
itself covers 320 hectares of woods, ponds and meadows — the largest
green space in inner north London.
Accommodation in the area is limited and mostly independent — Georgian
townhouse conversions, a few chain hotels near Swiss Cottage, and boutique
stays on Hampstead High Street. Rates are generally below the West End at
equivalent star ratings. Below are 4 hotels currently listed.
